Five Women Wearing the Same Dress
After a sell-out theatre run in Oxford, Gold Thread Productions took Oscar-winning writer Alan Ball's hilarious and moving comedy to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2018.
Set in 1993, Knoxville, Tennessee, this show follows five very different bridesmaids as they hide in an upstairs bedroom to avoid an ostentatious wedding reception for a despised bride. Sharing stories of love, tragedy and laughter, they unwittingly uncover buried trauma and ultimately find unexpected friendship.
Navigating topics of gender inequality, homophobia, religion, marriage and sexual assault– the women dominate both narrative and stage-time as they confront societal expectations of female identity in the late 20th century. In a world all too quick to underestimate female comedy, these five women with their colorful and vastly different outlooks on the world unite for a night of wit, solidarity and sisterhood.
This production was staged in aid of Clean Break, a charity seeking to empower and educate ex-female convicts to help change their lives through theatre.

'Five Women Wearing The Same Dress' perfectly captures the easy ebb and flow of conversation, featuring both the humorous highs and the darker lows. The story is delivered expertly by a strong cast which creates a fun and engaging production.' - Andrew Jameson, EdFringeReview
The comedic and moving elements are perfectly balanced in this performance directed by Lara Marks, as the women unravel each other’s stories and forge alliances in spite of their differences.[...] The combined talent of both cast and crew make for a heady combination - truly a riveting and immersive performance.' - Varsity Magazine
